“Despite the 6am work days, every day I am pleased that I have made the right decision at that time to pursue my interest in aircraft maintenance and to join Airbus.”
A career in aerospace and aviation was not Nabin’s initial plan having grown up in a family focusing on hospitality business. Prior to moving New Zealand, Nabin did his Diploma in Hospitality Management in the United Kingdom. At the back of his mind, he wanted to explore a career he is passionate about and this passion brought him to New Zealand to pursue a Certificate in Aeronautical Maintenance Engineering with Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. “Growing up in Nepal, English was not our first language, and I had a tutor from New Zealand who often shared about her country which sparked my interest. I am happy to be in New Zealand and build a career in aircraft maintenance here.”
After obtaining his certification, Nabin joined an aircraft manufacturing company as an Aircraft Fitter for four years before he was presented an opportunity to join Airbus New Zealand in 2018 as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Trainee. “Everyone here knew about Airbus and I was very keen to develop myself further with Airbus.” says Nabin, who has recently completed his 3-year Aircraft Maintenance Engineer traineeship.
“I enjoyed the traineeship where I got exposed to different divisions and sections which helped me to build my skills and expertise.”
Throughout his 3-year traineeship, Nabin had the exposure on P-3 Orion, J52 Engine, Lights Propeller, Structural skin works and Seasprite Helicopter. “Every part of the work has been interesting to me. I remember when I was with the structural team, I had to make a rib with no prior experience in doing so. With guidance from my seniors, I managed to complete the task and it gives me a sense of achievement to create something from scratch. All these experiences made me felt valued in Airbus.”
At the end of his traineeship, Nabin gets to state his interest and choose where he would like to go. “I am currently working in the helicopters department and maintaining our Seasprite Helicopter. On a daily basis, I am given a list of tasks to complete, and my supervisors provide me with the space to explore how to complete the tasks while being around to give guidance when needed. I can also raise any issues or concerns if I see anything that is not up to expectations.
“We Are One – no matter where we are, we are one big family. We may not be working in the same continent but we are always connected with colleagues globally who are always willing to help.”
Nabin shared how open-minded and friendly everyone is at Airbus. He was able to give suggestions and challenge status quo in a safe and comfortable environment. “I learned I could do better and people are willing to help me develop further than what I have aimed. It drives me to go further and learn new things all the time.”
Nabin is also part of the Safe Air Social Club formed by a group of Airbus employees where they frequently organised social gatherings and events. Out of work, he enjoys going for hikes and sightseeing in the nature.
